The river Peene from Lake Kummerower See to Anklam

This tour impresses with its primeval forest-like charm. A secial feature about the river Peene is that it is one of Germany's most natural rivers. Passing lush river floodplains, peat extraction sites, swampy  forests mires and lowland moors, it leads through almost untouched nature. Local animal species such as beavers, otters, kingfishers and white-tailed eagles can be observed here in peace and quiet.

Author’s recommendation

At the end of the tour, the Otto Lilienthal Museum in the city of Anklam, the birthplace of the aviation pioneer, is well worth a visit.

Safety information

The lake Kummerower See and the section before canoeists reach Anklam are particularly susceptible to wind. There is hardly any wind protection from the shore whenever strong winds occur.

Due to the low current and the low gradient of the river Peene (30cm), it can also be navigated upstream. There are no weirs on the stretch, no transfer is necessary. It is approved for motorboats.

Further information about the river Peene can be found at www.flussinfo.net/peene/uebersicht/

Turn-by-turn directions

On this paddle tour through the Peene Valley river landscape nature park, nature observations are particularly well suited. We start in the town Verchen, at the upper end of Lake Kummerower See, which is populated by water birds of many different kinds. Before going out on the water, it is therefore worth taking a look from the viewing platform at Aalbude. In spring and autumn migratory birds can be watched from here during their rest.

Very close to the 10 km downstream located resting place Trittelwitz, beavers have built their domicile and with a little luck can be seen in the early morning or at dusk. We continue through one of the most beautiful sections of the Peene Valley, which is characterised by untouched nature. The canoe glides through green river floodplains and peaty areas all the way to the town Demmin. The rivers Trebel and Tollense flow into the Peene in the town, which is situated on a small hill. We continue through the unspoilt landscape, accompanied by sea eagles, otters and beavers.

Numerous bathing places and resting places encourage you to linger on the further way. The tributaries of the river Peene invite for a short detour ashore. In the Swinow estuary the rest of an old sawmill can be inspected or a hike to the Gützkow orchid meadows can be undertaken. In the city Stolpe, it is worth visiting the visitor information centre in the Peene Valley Nature Park. Here you can find out more about this unique natural landscape. And, if you want to enjoy the Peene valley from above, the tower of the church Nikolaikirche in the city Anklam is a particularly good place to visit - that's where the tour ends.

Worth seeing: Dargun Monastery and Castle, Luisentor in Demmin, Peene Valley Visitor Information Centre in Stolpe, Otto von Lilienthal Museum and church Nikolaikirche in Anklam.
